Second phase of NMEC museum to be completed in July

CAIRO - 4 July 2017: The second phase of the newly anticipated National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) is expected to be completed by end of July, according to a released statement by the Ministry of Antiquities on Monday.

Minister of Antiquities Khaled El-Anany met with the museum’s board and president Mahrous Saeed to follow up on recent updates regarding the construction of the second phase.

Recent problems have occurred that stalled the launching of the second phase of the project, according to a released statement by the Ministry of Antiquities.

“The contract for the second phase of the museum was sanctioned in 2010 yet construction was stalled due to first the events of the Egyptian revolution in 2011 and the recently the Egyptian pound devaluation that occurred last November that delayed some works mentioned in contract,” Saeed President of NMEC told Egypt Today.

He also stated that those obstacles are submitted to a committee formed by the Egyptian Cabinet that will be responsible to compensate any losses.

Following the completion of the second phase, the exhibition halls will be finalized in cooperation with the Engineering Authority of the Egyptian Armed Forces.

Saeed confirmed to Egypt Today that works in the third phase is expected to begin in August.

The second phase is expected to be finalized on July 30 where it will include second construction phase is expected to include finalizing laboratories, the administrative and the reception departments, cinema, theater, commercial markets, and seminar halls.
The meeting, which was held at the Ministry of Antiquities, also discussed a plan of transferring antiquities and artifacts from various antiquities storages to the museum soon.
