ART 74 Visual Narratives, an art initiative and organization committed to creating and fostering immersive visual narratives launched its first collaboration with the 45th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) — under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Culture — on Thursday, November 14th with a week full of exciting art exhibitions, panels and workshops.
ART 74’s CIFF-sponsored agenda includes artworks from over 50 artists across five exhibitions, the first of which opened at the CIFF’s Cairo Opera House on November 14th across three locations; Salah Taher Hall, El Bab Hall, and El Hanager Hall.
The second exhibition also opened on the 14th and takes place at Downtown Cairo’s Cinema Radio, while the last exhibition takes place in collaboration with ART 74’s real estate and strategic partner Cairo Design District - CDD by LMD.
As for the initiative’s panels and talks, the first panel, titled ‘THE MIRROR OF EGYPT: Identity Through the Lens of Khairy Beshara’ took place at the Cairo Opera House on November 14th, and featured film directors Khairy Beshara and Omar ElZohairy, multidisciplinary artist Aya Tarek, film director and cinematographer Haya Khairat, and Chairperson and CEO of Gemini Africa Adly Thoma.
The panel was preceded by a private tour held by ART 74’s co-founders across both their Cairo Opera House and Cinema Radio locations. The tour was attended by artists and foreign guests as well as actress Karima Mansour, Brazil’s Ambassador to Egypt Paulino Franco de Carvalho, and Tereza Svaskova, the Czech Cultural Advisor in Egypt.
The initiative also held its official launch party at its Cairo Design District - CDD by LMD location on Friday, November 15th, where they also opened their CDD exhibition. The launch party was attended by artists, and several industry figures, as well as actresses Darine Haddad, Hend Abdel Halim, Mirhan Hussein, and director Morad Mostafa.
The second panel, titled ‘CONTEMPORARY ART INFLUENCE ON CINEMA: The Role of Visual Storytelling Across Mediums’, took place at Cairo Design District - CDD by LMD on November 16th, and featured the Dean of the Faculty of Art & Design at the British University in Egypt (BUE) Ahmed El Seragy, Executive Director of Shelter Art Space Chaymaa Ramzy, visual artist Mohamed Abla, Egyptian actress Dalia El Behery, and visual artist and interior designer Karim El Hayawan.
Earlier on the 16th, visual artist, filmmaker, Fulbright, Rockefeller, and Royal Society of the Arts Fellow Khaled Hafez held a hands-on masterclass in partnership with the BUE as an academic partner at Cairo Design District - CDD by LMD.
As for Sunday, November 17th, the Institut Français d'Égypte witnessed the initiative’s third and final panel, titled ‘NIGHT OF THE COUNTING YEARS: A Case Study on Shadi Abdel Salam's The Mummy’ — which was preceded by a screening of the film from, followed by the panel and a small reception.
The panel featured renowned production designer Onsi Abou Seif, Director of the Exhibitions and Art Collections Department at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Gamal Hosny, Khaled Hafez — visual artist, filmmaker, Fulbright and Rockefeller Fellow, as well as a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts — and filmmaker Mariam Abou Ouf.
As for the initiative’s upcoming masterclasses and workshops, those include a myriad of exciting educational and engaging events such as the Fundamentals of Storyboarding for Film Workshop held by Teacher Assistant at the Faculty of Art and Design at the BUE Ismail Youssef. The workshop will take place at Cairo Design District - CDD by LMD for two days — November 20th and 21st — from 6 pm to 9 pm.
