Arab Films highlighting Palestinian cause & struggles

It is not difficult to trace the presence of the Palestinian cause in Egyptian and Arab cinema. Cinema is the mirror to reality thus it played a pivotal role in highlighting Palestinian cause and struggles through a number of expressive films.
 
1- Nagy El Aly

In 1991, renowned director Atef al-Tayeb presented “Nagy El Aly” movie that stirred up wide controversy at that time. The film told the story of the eponymous Palestinian cartoonist Nagy El Aly who was the Arab World’s most famous cartoonist at the time. He was assassinated by the Mossad in London in 1987.

 

2- Bab El Shams

Directed by Yousry Nasrallah, the film revolves around a Palestinian citizen named Younis who flees to Lebanon and decides to join a Lebanon based resistance group, while his wife Nahila refuses to leave her hometown. So, he secretly moves between Lebanon and Palestine to see his wife. Based on a novel by legendary writer Elias Khoury of the same name, the film is considered one of the most important films that document the history of Palestinian crises. Released in 2004, the film stars Orwa Nyrabia,Rim Turki, Hiam Abbass, and Bassel El Khayat.
 
3- Allah Ma’ana

After the Israeli Declaration of Independence in 1948, the Egyptian army prepares to fight Israel. Army officer Ahmed Gamal finds shoddy imported ordinance and bands together with fellow officers to reveal the true sources of the corruption. The film houses a notable group of stars including Emad Hamdy, Faten Hamama, Mahmoud El Meligy among others. Alla Ma’ana is directed by Aly Badrakhan.
 
4- Ard El Salam

The movie revolves around an Egyptian commando named Ahmed who works to free a Palestinian village from the control of the Israelis and encounters a Palestinian girl named Salma.
Ard El Salam movie stars Faten Hamama, Omar El Sherif, Abdel Salam El Nabulsi, Abdel Wareth Assar among others. The movie is directed by Kamal El Sheikh.
 
5- 200 Meters

The emotional film is a real-life tale of people smuggling across the Palestine and Israel border, following the harrowing highs and lows as they travel hundreds of miles trying to cover just 200 metres. 
 
The film follows proud and principled Mustafa, a Palestinian father trapped behind the separation wall trying to save his sick child. Motaz plays arty activist Kifah who also tries to cross the border on the same smuggling trip. 
 
6- Fata Men Palestine

During 1948 war, an Egyptian pilot defends the Palestinian land against the Israeli enemy. In the same air raid, his plane crashes in a Palestinian village, and a Palestinian girl named Salma finds him injured in his foot. She hosts him in her home and works to heal his wounds. The film tackled the stories of the Palestinian guerrillas who are ready to sacrifice with their lives to get rid of the Zionist occupation. The movie stars Mahmoud Zulfcar, Souad Mohamed, Hassan Fayek among others. The movie is directed by Mahmoud Zulfcar.
 
7- Welad El Am

The movie revolves around the Egyptian lady Salwa who suddenly wakes up to find that her husband who she discovers is a Mosaad officer has kidnapped her and their children and took them to Israel. The Egyptian General Intelligence Directorate assigned one of its officers to save her and her children. Welad El Am stars Karim Abdel Aziz, Mona Zaki, Sherif Moneer, Eman, Entesar among others.
