CAIRO – 17 July 2017: The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery in Yorkshire, UK has been awarded the prestigious 'Museum of the Year' award, BBC reports. The Gallery will receive £100,000 ($130,726) as their prize, and can take pride in knowing they have been honored one of the absolute best Museum awards worldwide.
The gallery was named after English abstract sculptor Barbara Hepworth, who was born in Wakefield, 1903. Planned in 2004 and completed in 2010, the gallery and features a variety of unique abstract sculptures by an array of artists such as Richard Long, Henry Moore, and Paul Nash, and hosts educational tours for families. The gallery even offers its own award, the 'Hepworth Prize for Sculpture', a prize of £30,000. The prize, much like the museum, takes its name after the artist who is renowned as Britain's most famous woman sculptor.
According to the BBC, the announcement was made on the Great Court at the British Museum of London.
