CAIRO – 11 June 2017: Egyptian exports of cotton hiked 19.6 percent between December and the end of February, state-run statistics agency said Sunday.

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) detailed in a statement that exports reached 134,800 metric kantars during that period, compared to 112,700 metric kantars in the corresponding period last year.

With regards to consumption, Egypt consumed 127,600 metric kantars of cotton in the aforementioned three months, up from 76,400 between December 2015 and February 2016, with 67 percent increase.

CAPMAS noted that the increase is not “real” as it comes after what it described as a big decline in 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons.

The amount of ginned cotton slumped 54.2 percent between December and February to reach 0.4 million metric kantars, down from 0.9 million metric kantars in the corresponding period in 2016.
