LUXOR - 26 February 2018: Egypt is the ninth largest fish producer in the world with a total production of 1.5 billion tons, Egyptian expert Mansour Matbouli said on Monday.
Matbouli, dean of Clinical Unit of Fish Medicine at the Vienna University of Veterinary Medicine, said Egyptian per capita consumption of fish ranges between 15 to 17 kg, a high quota if compared to other countries.
Egypt's revenues from the fish industry hit 2.2 billion pounds, the highest if compared to other African states, he said at the eighth session of "Egypt Can 3" conference here.
He noted that most of world countries now rely on aquaculture instead of fishing, saying fish farming does not contradict with agricultural irrigation.
Now, the world tends to use water in fish farming first then in agriculture, he added.
Other Egyptian expatriate experts and professors spoke in the session.
"Egypt Can 3" conference kicked off in Luxor on Sunday under the sponsorship of President Abdel Fatah El Sisi.
The two-day event is organized by the Ministry of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs.
