CAIRO – 24 August 2017: Egyptian exports of cotton hiked 9.2 percent between March and the end of May, state-run statistics agency, said on Thursday.
The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) detailed in a statement that exports reached 7,149 metric kantars during that period, compared to 6,145 metric kantars in the corresponding period last year.
India was the prime receiver for cotton exports, as it received more than 50 percent of total exports: 75,700 metric kantars.
With regards to consumption, Egypt consumed 93,000 metric kantars of cotton in the aforementioned three months, up from 1,131 metric kantars in the same period in 2016, with 1.29 percent decrease.
Egyptian exports of cotton hiked 19.6 percent between December and the end of February. A CAPMAS report released earlier this month indicated that exports reached 134,800 metric kantars during that period, compared to 112,700 metric kantars in the corresponding period last year.
Cotton imports recorded LE 6.3 billion ($347 million) in 2016, according to CAPMAS.
