CAIRO - 21 May 2026: Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said Agiba Petroleum Company has achieved a major new discovery in the Western Desert, marking its largest find in 15 years.
Agiba Petroleum, a joint venture between the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation and Italy’s Eni, made the discovery through the Badran South 1X exploratory well, which was drilled using Egyptian Drilling Company’s EDC 9 rig.
Initial estimates point to around 330 billion cubic feet of natural gas and 10 million barrels of condensates and crude oil, bringing the discovery’s total potential to nearly 70 million barrels of oil equivalent.
The ministry highlighted the strategic value of the discovery, noting that it is located only 10 kilometers from existing facilities and infrastructure. This proximity is expected to allow for faster development and quicker integration into production.
The well also uncovered multiple sandstone and limestone reservoirs, with a net productive thickness of 400 feet, strengthening its economic and production potential.
According to the ministry, the discovery reflects the success of efforts to encourage partners to expand exploration near existing fields, helping reduce development costs, speed up production, and make better use of available infrastructure and advanced exploration technologies.
