CAIRO – 18 February 2025:  Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides attended the Egypt International Energy Conference (EGYPS 2025) in Cairo, where they witnessed the signing of two key agreements between Egypt and Cyprus. These agreements mark a major milestone in the development of Cyprus’s natural gas reserves, leveraging Egypt’s advanced energy infrastructure.

This collaboration aligns with Egypt’s vision to establish itself as a regional hub for natural gas trade and distribution. Under this strategy, Egypt plans to process gas from Eastern Mediterranean discoveries, supply it to the domestic market, and re-export it to Europe, strengthening its position as a major energy player in the region.

The first agreement was signed by Karim Badawi, Egypt’s Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, George Papanastasiou, Cyprus’s Minister of Energy, Commerce, and Industry, and Claudio Descalzi, CEO of the Italian energy company Eni. The second agreement was signed by Karim Badawi, Minister George Papanastasiou, and Clay Neff, President of Chevron Global Exploration and Production.

These agreements represent a significant step in deepening energy cooperation between Egypt and Cyprus. By facilitating the development of Cypriot gas fields through Egyptian infrastructure, they lay the groundwork for expanded collaboration in the energy sector. Meanwhile, ongoing negotiations aim to bring additional Cypriot gas to Egypt, further solidifying the country’s role as a regional hub for gas processing and exports.
