CAIRO – 12 December 2024: The Ministry of Environment has announced the commencement of construction for a cutting-edge waste recycling and processing facility in the Refa district of Assiut Governorate, backed by a total investment of LE 250 million.

Led by Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad, the project is a key initiative under the National Solid Waste Management Program, highlighting Egypt's commitment to modernizing waste management systems and achieving sustainable development goals.

Spanning 56,000 square meters, the facility will incorporate advanced German-Dutch technology with two processing lines capable of handling 60 tons of waste per hour. Construction is expected to take 18 months, featuring fully integrated infrastructure, mechanical processing lines, and a robust operational framework. The project also includes comprehensive workforce training to ensure the transfer of expertise in operations and maintenance, securing the long-term effectiveness of the facility.

The economic impact of the plant is substantial. It is projected to create 100 direct and 2,000 indirect job opportunities, bolstering local employment and economic growth. Additionally, the facility will produce high-value outputs, such as high-quality organic fertilizers to support the agricultural sector and refuse-derived fuel (RDF), an eco-friendly and cost-effective energy source for energy-intensive industries. These products will serve regional needs while contributing to national economic development.

Aligned with President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi's directives, the project underscores Egypt's broader strategy to enhance waste management infrastructure, reduce pollution, and improve environmental and public health conditions. By advancing recycling and processing systems, the plant will foster cleaner air, water, and soil while conserving natural resources.

This initiative marks a pivotal step toward sustainable environmental and economic progress in Egypt, driving industrial growth, creating valuable products, and setting a benchmark for modern waste management solutions in the region.
