CAIRO – 29 October 2024: Japanese Ambassador to Egypt, Oka Hiroshi, announced upcoming plans for cooperation between the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in training and technical studies.
In a meeting with SCA Chairman Osama Rabie, Hiroshi also expressed a desire to deepen ties with the Japanese Shipowners’ Association to explore new opportunities for collaboration, focusing on transit policies and marketing strategies.
Rabie highlighted the Suez Canal’s introduction of new services to support transiting ships, from maintenance and repair to pollution control and maritime rescue, catering to both regular and emergency needs.
Emphasizing the SCA’s commitment to direct communication with partners and clients, Rabie noted the importance of meeting the maritime community’s needs amid emerging security challenges in the Red Sea region.
As part of the Canal’s green transformation goals, Rabie shared that the SCA has made substantial progress toward its Green Canal by 2030 initiative.
Efforts include launching waste removal services for transiting ships and converting guidance stations along the canal to renewable energy sources.
Rabie expressed optimism about furthering Egypt-Japan relations to advance collaborative projects focused on investment, training, and sustainable development, strengthening the Suez Canal’s role in the region.
