Egypt's production index for transformative, extractive industries dips 5.45% in January

CAIRO - 7 April 2024: Production index of manufacturing and extractive industries (excluding crude oil and petroleum products) declined 5.45 percent in January 2024 on a monthly basis, recording 92.85 (primary), compared to 98.20 in December (final), according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).
 
It noted that the index for the beverage industry rose to 225.74 during January 2024 compared to December 2023, where it reached 182.81, with an increase of 23.48 percent, in line with market needs.
 
In the same upward trend, the index for the chemical materials and products industry reached 78.76 during January 2024 compared to December 2023, where it was 74.89, with an increase of 5.17 percent, in line with market needs.
 
As for the economic activities that witnessed a decrease, the index for the electrical appliances industry reached 106.39 during January 2024 compared to December 2023, where it was 127.56, with a decrease of 16.60 percent due to the unavailability of necessary raw materials.
 
The index for the basic metals industry reached 52.48 during January 2024 compared to December 2023, where it was 60.29, with a decrease of 12.95%, according to market needs.
 
The manufacturing and extractive industries index is a short-term indicator that expresses developments in industrial production values during the study period, with the exception of crude oil and petroleum products.
 
It is also an important indicator for businessmen to take their periodic decisions in the short term, especially as it clarifies the facts and data that contribute to the ability to plan and draw policies.
 
CAPMAS has updated the index methodology using the base year 2012/2013 and at the level of the industrial activity indices according to the Industrial Activity Index (ISIC Rev.4) and using the monthly index (for producer prices based on 2012/2013).
