CAIRO – 5 October 2021: The schedule of the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia includes operating the first phase of the project in October 2024, with a capacity of 1500 MW, according to Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker.

Shaker added on statements on the sidelines of the signing of the final contracts to start the implementation of the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, that the rest of the capacities will be entered successively until they reach 3,000 MW for exchange with the Saudi side.

He confirmed that the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, headed by Sabah Mashali, has completed studies on the electrical interconnection project between Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and all technical aspects of the project, which allows the exchange of 3,000 megawatts between the two countries at peak times; which differ in time in both counties by about 6 hours.

The minister added that it is scheduled to start implementing the project from today in the construction of lines, and that the construction of the first phase takes 36 months from the date of signing Contracts with an investment cost of up to LE 8 billion for the Egyptian side.

On Tuesday morning, the Saudi Electricity Company and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company signed Tuesday the awarding contracts of the electrical interconnection project between the Kingdom and Egypt.

The contracts, which were signed simultaneously between Riyadh and Cairo, included contracts with three consortiums of international and local companies to implement the connection project, which has a capacity of 3,000 megawatts, with a 500 kV HVDC technology.

They consist of the construction of three high-voltage substations, the East Madinah Station, the Tabuk Station in the Kingdom, and the Badr Station in East Cairo, linked by overhead transmission lines with a length of about 1,350 meters and marine cables in the Gulf of Aqaba with a length of 22 km, at a total cost of the project amounted to $1.8 billion.
