CAIRO – 8 July 2017: The Central Bank of Egypt (CBE) and local banks undertook proactive measures to protect their data from the cyber attacks that have recently taken place across the world, Assistant Deputy Governor at the CBE’s Information Technology Directorate Ayman Hussein said Saturday.

He said that the banking networks in Egypt are now safe and that the CBE approved the establishment of a technology center to respond to the emergencies of the banking sector, which will be finished in two years.

Talking about mobile payments, during the Union of Arab Banks (UAB) Forum launched Friday in Sharm El-Sheikh, Hussein said that the number of mobile payment clients in Egypt has reached six million.

The value of deposits in Arab banks reached $2.3 trillion, which is 90 percent of the GDP of the Arab region, secretary-general of UAB Wessam Fattouh said.

Total loan portfolio of the Arab banking sector amounted to $1.9 trillion by the end of March, funding the Arab economics by 77 percent, Fattouh added.

A wave of cyber attacks hit the world in May and June. The biggest one was WannaCry attack, which wreaked havoc in computer systems worldwide.

Britain's National Health Service, US package delivery giant FedEx, Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica and Germany's Deutsche Bahn rail network were among those hit by the attack.
