CAIRO – 2 July 2017: The Ministry of Immigration and Expatriate Affairs will hold a conference in Cairo on July 2-3 titled ‘Egyptian Women Can.’ The conference will be held under the auspices of President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi and in cooperation with the National Council for Women (NCW), and will put the spotlight on the role of expat Egyptian women.
The conference comes as part of the “Al Taa Marbouta is your strength” awareness campaign launched by the NCW during the month of Ramadan to support and empower Egyptian women and highlight the importance of women's participation in all economic, political and social sectors. A total of 31 expat female Egyptian experts who specialize in scientific, intellectual and academic fields will participate in the conference. The conference also comes in conjunction with Sisi’s announcement that 2017 is the ‘year of Egyptian women’ and the national initiative to enable Egyptian women.
The Minister of Immigration and Expatriate Affairs Nabila Makram, said in a statement on June 16 that she is confident that the conference will contribute to strengthen the role of female Egyptian expatriates in developing Egypt and to achieve the sustainable development goals of “Egypt Vision 2030.” The minister added that the conference would shed light on the achievements of such women in all fields to form role models for new generations of young men and women.
Media figure and journalist Lamis al-Hadidy is expected to facilitate the first session of the conference entitled ‘she and the Government,’ under conference theme ‘women are partners in decision-making.’
Key speakers in the first session include the four female ministers in the government, Ghada Waly, Dr. Sahar Nasr, Ambassador Nabila Makram, and Dr. Hala al-Saeed. Each female minister will present her experience as a minister and how she contributed to forming policies and decision-making processes.
Furthermore, the first session will include a speech by engineer Nadia Abdu, governor of Beheira, to present her experience as the first female governor in Egypt.
The agenda of the conference includes a number of themes over the course of the two days, dealing with the areas of governance, health, economy, technical education, production, migration and information, in order to review the experiences of women abroad and discuss how they support the development of Egypt.
Expat Egyptian women participating in the conference:
1. Doaa al-Ansari - Australia: a Professor of Physical Therapy in the University of Melbourne, Australia. She is a founding member at the developing committee of the “Heart Online” website for cardiovascular health and rehabilitation. Ansari, received a scholarship from the University of Melbourne and was honored locally and internationally for her clinical research. She won awards from the U.S., Europe and Australia.
2. Dalia el-Shafei Mostafa – Canada: Psychological consultant and expert in self development and leadership sciences. Mostafa, holds 36 international awards from Canada, Europe and Egypt in scientific research, engineering, industrial achievements, and community service. She was awarded the highest honorary award in Canada for voluntary work by the Governor-General of Canada, the representative of Queen Elizabeth II
3. Hala Salem – The United States: Pharmacist and member of the Egyptian-American Medical Association. Salem contributes to forming policies related to medicine use in her hospital. She also works to develop health services to provide better pharmacy care.
4. Eman Ghoneim – The United States: Director of the Research Laboratory for Remote Sensing at Boston University in the U.S. Ghoneim, has a long experience in remote sensing applications, multi-spectral radar and GIS in the exploration of groundwater areas, development of agriculture and controlling natural hazards. She was awarded the 2017 “Excellence in Teaching” from the University of North Carolina Wilmington. She published more than 77 scientific articles.
5. Amany Hassanein – The United States: An expert in restoring physical functions to people unable to move as a result of diseases and injuries. Hassanein works to restore and strengthen their physical and functional capacities.
6. Manal Seri – Italy: Chairperson of the Arab Women's Association in Rome and member in the Secretariat of the European Commission for Arab Media. Seri, is a member at the International Society of Gynecological Pathologies that facilitates dissemination of information and exchange of knowledge on Gynecological diseases.
7. Amira Alnqali – The United Kingdom: Senior Lecturer in Architecture, and Director of the Sustainable Architectural Design Master's Program in Lincoln University, UK. She holds a doctorate in environmental behavior and energy efficiency in lightweight structures. Alnqali, is a registered architect in Egypt since 1998 and a member of the Egyptian Architects Association.
8. Jihan Mohamed Gado – France: The chairperson of the International Association for Intellectual and Cultural Creativity in France and member at the district council for the province of Versailles. She is a member of the International Federation of Francophone Press. Gado is an ambassador of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Goodwill Ambassador of the International Commission on Women's Rights, and a member of the International Union for Women's Rights in Paris.
9. Hasna Atiwi – The United States: Senior Quality Engineer at “Eaton Corporation” in Beltsville, Maryland. She is an expert in operation and manufacturing engineering, quality control of operations, development and management of engineering projects. Atiwi represents “Eaton” in front of many top customers including Boeing, Airbus and Rolls Royce.
10. Ann Ali – Australia: Member at the Australian parliament representing the Labor Party of the province of Conan. She is a founding chair at “People against Violent Extremism”. Ali is an activist in the fields of combating terrorism and fundamentalism. She received the “Distinguished Woman” Award in Australia for her community and charity work. She was selected as the Australian public figure of the year and received the prestigious Australian security medal.
11. Fawzia Ashmawi – Switzerland: Expert in research, translation and textbooks
12. Mona Shandi – Australia: Commander at the Australian Navy
13. Hoda Halim – The United States: Chief Pharmacist at “Lake Forest” Hospital. Halim is a co-founder of an institution for the preservation of heritage and archaeological buildings in the U.S.
14. Jacqueline Saad – The United States: Business woman and business consultant. Saad, established and runs her own company.
15. Laila Bens – The United States: Certified Financial Consultant
16. Nancy Hadi: Founder and Managing Partner of IBis International
17. Mary Hanna – The United States: Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at Johns Hopkins University. She is the Medical Director of a surgical clinic. Hanna established the first clinic in North America to care for patients with chronic pain associated with surgical procedures.
18. Afaf Abed Rabbo – The United Kingdom: Media figure and chairperson of the Egyptian European Association.
19. Isra Nawar – The United states: Development Director and Chairperson of the Arts, Exhibitions and Programs Committee at Chapman University Academic Library, California. Nawar is an innovative activist in charity work. She works to promote the principles of diversity and tolerance working with the University's Interfaith Center.
20. Huda El-Maraghi – Canada: First woman in Canada to be appointed as a dean at the College of Engineering. Professor and Director of the Intelligent Manufacturing Systems Center at the University of Windsor.
21. Nourhan Sameh – The Netherlands: Advisor for the Dutch Ministry of Justice and member of the National Front of Egyptians in the West. Sameh is member of the Union of Arab Women in the Netherlands.
22. Wagiha Taylor – The United states: A business professor at Wilkes University, Pennsylvania. Honorary President of the World Economists Conference and the head of the Association of Egyptian American Scientists in the U.S. and Canada.
23. Yusria Salem – The United States: Senior Debt and Debt Collection Specialist in the U.S.
24. Rehab al-Nimer – The United Kingdom: Information Security and Digital Innovation Engineering consultant. She holds a doctorate in Information Technology Engineering from Germany. Nimer, was selected as the best woman in technology by Google.
25. Rania al-Mashat – The United States: Advisor to the International Monetary Fund IMF. Rania was selected among the top 50 influential women in the Egyptian economy and among the top 100 leading figures in Africa.
26. Sahar Ramzy – The Netherlands: Head of the Union of Arab Women in the Netherlands. She is the founder of the Egyptian Women's Union in the Netherlands. Ramzy is also a member at the Supreme Council of the Egyptian Community in the Netherlands.
27. Marwa Eid – France: Captain of the Egyptian national handball team and the first Egyptian professional athlete in France. Eid was a top scorer for two consecutive seasons in France.
28. Mary Zaki – South Africa: A lawyer representing Egyptians and Arab in Johannesburg. She is the head of the Egyptian Forum in South Africa and the head of Public Relations for the Arab Community in South Africa.
29. Mona Saleh – Germany: Professor of Pharmacy at Munich and Vienna universities. Mona is a pioneer in treating epidemic diseases of fish through nano-technology and genetic editing. i
30. Eman Rashwan – Germany: Holds a doctorate in Law and Economics from the European Doctorate Program.
31. Eman Wahman – The United States: Professional accounting and sales management expert with 30 years of experience in a wide range of industries such as healthcare, hospitality, retail sales and accountancy sectors. Wahman covers international political events for various Arab news agencies and works as New York correspondent for the Independent TV channel.
