Sisi, Museveni talk bolstering Egyptian-Ugandan ties

CAIRO – 11 March 2019: Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni lauded the bilateral relations and the brotherly ties between Egypt and Uganda, expressing appreciation of the Egyptian people and leadership, presidency spokesman Bassam Radi said on Sunday.

During his phone call with Egyptian President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, Museveni referred to broad prospects of developing relations and pushing forward joint cooperation between Egypt and Uganda.

Museveni called for enhancing the joint work concerning African issues in light of the Egyptian presidency of the African Union this year. He added that this will contribute to achieving the desired sustainable development of the African countries and peoples, and will stimulate efforts towards achieving continental integration at all levels.

For his part, the Egyptian president highlighted the special bilateral relations with Uganda and the importance he attaches to coordination and consultation with President Museveni on African issues for the latter's extensive experience in promoting integration efforts in Africa.

The consultations with the Ugandan president also come, according to Sisi, to enhance joint African work, especially with regard to the issues of peace, security and Africa's development agenda.

The call also addressed developing cooperation between the Nile Basin countries, the presidential spokesman said, adding that the two presidents share the same vision concerning the importance of engaging in constructive and effective dialogue to enhance strategic cooperation in the Nile Basin region.


In May 2018, the two presidents signed three memoranda of understanding (MOUs) in the fields of electricity, agriculture, and the construction and management of industrial zones, during Museveni’s two-day visit to Cairo.

According to an official statement issued by the presidency, the first MOU is between Egypt’s Electricity and Renewable Energy Ministry and its Ugandan counterpart to establish a 4-megawatt solar power plant in Uganda, the second is regarding the development of agriculture in both countries and the third is between the Egyptian Industrial Development Authority and the Uganda Investment Authority.

Both presidents affirmed during a joint press conference that they discussed a lot of issues of mutual interest regarding water security and Africa. Sisi affirmed that he explained Egypt’s point of view about several issues regarding water security and he thanked his Ugandan counterpart for the historical visit.

In June 2017, Sisi visited Uganda to participate in the Nile Basin Summit; several talks were held between Sisi and his Ugandan counterpart on the sidelines of the summit. Sisi’s first presidential visit to Uganda was in December 2016, where the two leaders praised the long, historical relations between the two countries and affirmed that efforts will be exerted to enhance the two countries’ relations and cooperation.
