CAIRO – 12 September 2017: The ambassador and permanent representative of Egypt to the United Nations (UN), Amr Abdellatif Aboulatta, presented his credentials to U.N. Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon on September 4, 2014. He is also the Chair of the U.N. Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee since 2016.

Egypt head the Security Council three times since it was elected as a non-permanent member state in January 2016 for two years. In his capacity, Aboulatta stressed that he will cooperate with other member states to focus on combating terrorism and to strengthen the international judiciary cooperation as one of the most important pillars of counter-terrorism efforts. He also highlighted the importance of raising the efficiency and effectiveness of peace keeping operations.

During his presidency developments of the Palestinian issue, the Middle East peace process and the situation in Libya and Somalia were also on the agenda for discussion as well as the situation in Syria and the issue of landmines and explosive war remnants.
Abullatta will attend the U.N. General Assembly 72nd session launching on September 12, where President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi is expected to deliver a speech addressing the assembly on September 21.

Prior to his permanent representative position, Aboulatta served as the Assistant Foreign Minister and Head of the Diplomatic Personnel Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt from September 2013 to August 2014. He also served as the Assistant Foreign Minister and Permanent Representative of Egypt to the Arab League, from September 2012 to August 2013.

From September 2008 to August 2012, he was Egypt’s Ambassador to Jordan after a one-year stint as the Deputy Assistant of the Minister of Foreign Affairs for International Political Affairs and the U.N. From 2002-2006 Aboulatta was the Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Permanent Representative of Egypt to the U.N. in New York from 2002 to 2006.

From 1999 to 2002, he was the head of the Department of the U.S. and Canadian Affairs. Prior to 1999 Aboulatta served as a Counselor at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and at the Egyptian Embassy in Washington, D.C.

Egypt’s permanent ambassador to the U.N. was born in 1957 and has a Masters of Arts degree from the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris and a holds a Bachelors degree in Commerce from Cairo University. He is fluent in Arabic, French and English.

Since 1987, Aboulatta worked in different departments within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also held several diplomatic positions including; the first Secretary at the cabinet of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the second secretary at the Embassy of Egypt in Paris.

Amr Aboulatta was born in 1957, he has one daughter. He holds a Masters degree from the International Institute of Public Administration in Paris and a Bachelors degree in Commerce from Cairo University. He speaks Arabic, English and French.
