Shortly after Harassmap went live, Egypt Today hit the streets to find out what you thought of the project. Edited excerpts:
“I think it is a great idea but it will be hard to keep track of it because harassment is everywhere, so they will be basically mentioning every place.”
-- Dina Osman, 24, housewife.
“We should tackle the social problem at the root and not find tech savvy alternatives to avoid the street of one’s own country,”
-- Ahmed El Mezeny, 24, editor.
“I saw it and i think it is a very good idea as it is a good way for girls to know places they can avoid or take a guy with them.”
-- Safwan Abou Heiba, 28, bank employee.
“We don’t know how effective that is yet, but as long as the Harassmap is trying to do something about sexual harassment it can stop. I believe that in the long run it will be useful.”
-- Lobna Younes, 25, marketing executive.
“I would consider using Harrassmap in the future, but I haven’t been seriously harassed to make me angry enough to use it yet. I am afraid, although the step is brilliant, that our society won’t evenly benefit from it, like almost every other thing in our socio-economically segregated society. Anyway, it is a good and overdue step in that direction.”
--Hanan Badr, 32, university teaching assistant.
