CAIRO – 31 December 2020: The Cairo-based regional office of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday that the organization has not been notified of any cases infected with the new coronavirus variant in Egypt so far, Egypt’s state-owned news agency MENA reported.

The WHO highlighted the media's role in promoting health awareness among the citizens, saying that people should apply the social distance, do exercises, and eat healthy food.

The Health Ministry announced that Egypt registered 1,411 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, raising the total number of confirmed cases thus far to 136,644.

In a statement, the ministry added that the death toll in the country was raised to 7,576 after 56 patients died from the virus over the past 24 hours. As many as 411 patients were discharged from isolation hospitals after receiving necessary medical care, taking the number of recovered cases to 111,451 so far, the spokesman said.

Last week, Health Minister Hala Zayed officially announced that Egypt is facing the second wave of coronavirus. In media comments to Al-Arabia news on Monday, she said that the official number of the infected cases does not reflect the reality on the ground.

Also, the Cabinet announced further measures to curb the spread of the novel virus, including canceling the New Year celebrations and pledging tough penalties against hotels violating the decision.
