CAIRO – 18 December 2020: Egypt's Grand Mufti and President of the General Secretariat for Fatwa Authorities Worldwide Shawqi Allam called for preserving and advancing the role of the Arabic language [the Classical Arabic], adding that it is a national duty in order to preserve our Arab and Islamic identity.

In his weekly speech on Friday which coincides with the World Arabic Language Day on December 18, Allam said that the function of a language in a society is not limited to communication only, but it is also a tool that people use to preserve their cultural heritage.

The language is the first element that helps spread the culture and civilization, he continued.

According to the United Nations data, the Arabic language is being spoken daily by more than 290 million people.

Since 2012, the UN celebrates the Arabic language every year on December 18, which marks the day when the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted Arabic as the sixth official language of the international organization.
