CAIRO -8 June 2020: The Ministry of Health and Population confirmed in a statement on Wednesday that Egypt is completely safe from the bubonic plague that has recently appeared in China.

The statement indicated that the ministry has a strong surveillance system that addresses 41 diseases and epidemics and that is capable of protecting society from any epidemiological risks that come from abroad.

The Ministry of Health explainedthat plagueisa bacterial infection and that one case appeared in the Chinese state of Mongolia and was isolated and dealt with quickly. Bacterial infectionscan be treated withantibiotics, so plague has a cure.

For his part, Mohamed Abdel-Fattah, head of the Central Department for Preventive Medicine Affairs at the Ministry of Health, told Egypt Today that the World Health Organization confirmed that there is no need to worry regarding the emergence of the plague.

He also said that bacterial infections are treated by antibiotics, while viral infections still cause concern because they have no cure, asthe existing drugs limit the activity and reproduction of the virus only.

The World Health Organization has made it clear that the plague can be treated with antibiotics, and people recover from it if treatment starts early.

In areas where the plague outbreak erupted, people with symptoms should move to a health center to assess the condition for treatment.
