CAIRO - 23 January 2020: The Islamic nation needs a generation of young people who are able to counter the ideology promoted by the "gangs of extremism and terrorism" that is only meant to destroy Muslim countries, former dean of the Faculty of Islamic Call at al-Azhar University told a group of Somali Imams on Thursday.

Such upbringing should focus on the religious and ethical motivation of young Muslims so they reach the stage of moral, spiritual and intellectual sublimity that will enable them to not succumb to violent ideas, Dr. Gamal Farouk said in the lecture in Cairo.

Since 2013, Al-Azhar has exerted much efforts to counter extremist ideology in Egypt and beyond, as many Imams from non-Arab Muslim countries are educated at al-Azhar and return home to spread the teachings they learned.
