CAIRO - 23 July 2019: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi asserted Tuesday that July 23 revolution set an example of the awareness of the Egyptian people.

The president wrote on his Twitter account: "Today we celebrate the anniversary of the glorious revolution of July 23. A revolution that exemplified the great awareness of the Egyptian people and their will to build a new phase in the history of their nation based on the principles of justice and dignity."

The July 23 revolution took place on July 23, 1952 by the Free Officers Movement, a group of army officers led by Mohammed Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser. The coup aimed at overthrowing King Farouk’s regime.

The movement had more political ambitions, and quickly moved to abolish the constitutional monarchy and aristocracy of Egypt and Sudan, aiming to establish a republic, end the British occupation of the country, and secure the independence of Sudan.
