CAIRO - 4 May 2019: The first day of the holy month of Ramadan will fall on Monday, May 6, said Mohamed Gharib, a professor of solar research at the National Institute of Astronomical Research Saturday.

Gharib explained that according to astronomical calculations prepared by the Research Laboratory at the National Institute of Astronomical Research, the holy month is set to start on Monday.

In the same context, Dar al-Ifta will host a ceremony on Sunday May 6 for moon sighting, after which it will officially announce the beginning of the holy fasting month of Ramadan.

The Mufti’s adviser, Ibrahim Negm, said that the ceremony will be held at Al-Azhar Conference Center (ACC), with the participation of prominent religious figures and senior officials.

The ceremony will be attended by Al Azhar Grand Imam Ahmed el Tayyib, Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa and Justice Minister Hossam Abdel Rahim.
The month of dawn-to-dusk fasting is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is observed by Muslim communities worldwide as the month of fasting that commemorates the first revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad.
