Egyptian initiative for combating violence against women launched

CAIRO – 26 November 2018: A national initiative for combating violence against women was launched on Sunday at the Investment and International Cooperation Ministry’s HQ.

The largest of its kind, the initiative groups international and local partners, including the ministries of Investment, Transport and Sports and Youth in addition to the National Council for Women (NCW), along with international organizations and bodies, such as: UN Women, the European Union, the French Development Agency (AFD), and the German Development Agency.

Minister of Investment Sahar Nasr, NCW chief Maya Morsi, deputy transport minister Amr Shaath, UN Women Egypt country representative Blerta Aliko, head of EU delegation to Egypt Ivan Surkos, and France’s ambassador in Cairo Stéphane Romatet were among the attendees during the event.

The initiative launched an awareness campaign against sexual harassment in means of transportation, in addition to all other forms of violence against women.

The campaign offers information and pieces of advice for increasing the safety rates in subway stations and public places.

Praising the initiative, Nasr said she feels happy for launching such campaign in cooperation with development partners, adding it came as part of the political leadershi’s efforts for empowering women.
