CAIRO – 28 May 2017: Media must follow standards in its coverage of events such as terrorist Minya incident on Friday, and not to rely on social media as sources for news, said Media Professor at Cairo University Enas Abo Youssef Sunday.

Abo Youssef called on media organizations Sunday to use media ethics code when covering important events.

She also stated that media should respect the privacy of the victims’ families and not to talk with them in the midst of this crisis. She further clarified that clear instructions and advice should be issued to deal with terrorist incidents, in providing professional media coverage. For instance, no information should be obtained from a source under the age of 21.

She stressed that news should be obtained from responsible sources and officials, whereby in the Minya incident the sources must be either from an official in the government or from the church only.
