Medics and citizens collaborate to evacuate the patients from al-Hussein University Hospital after massive fires broke out on July 7, 2018 - Egypt Today/By Khaled Kamel

CAIRO - 7 July 2018: Three people were injured due to the massive fires erupted at four floors of al-Hussein University Hospital in Cairo on Saturday, heath ministry stated, saying that all other patients were evacuated immediately.

Health minister affirmed that the injured people and patients were evacuated from the hospital, admitting them to other hospitals not to be affected by the smoke and to receive the necessary treatment, through 15 ambulances provided by the ministry.



The Civil Defense Department thwarted the fires by 12 fire trucks and dozens of firefighters to put out the fire that broke out in four floors of the hospital.



Al-Hussein University Hospital is owned by al-Azhar University; funded and supervised by al-Azhar institution.

The Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyib directed al-Azhar leaders to provide the hospital’s patients with all necessary aids, and to launch an immediate investigation to know the reason behind the fire and to hold the defaulters accountable.

The initial examination pointed out to a short circuit launched fires at ophthalmology department and extended to three other floors, while al-Azhar Unversity denied in official statement any deaths caused by the incident.

Undersecretary of al-Azhar Abbas Shoman and President of al-Azhar University Mohamed al-Mahrasawy were present at the incident site, to follow up the evacuation and firefighting were going as quick as possible.

“Up to 115 patients were evacuated from the hospital and admitted to other hospitals follows al-Azhar like al-Mounira General hospital, Sayed Galal and al-Zahraa’ Hospital,” al-Azhar statement reads.
