CAIRO – 1 June 2018: President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi has sacked on Thursday Hisham Heikal, under-secretary of the Administrative Prosecution Authority (APA), only two days before his inauguration as president of Egypt for a second term. The presidential decree no. 228/2018 was published in the Gazette.

According to the new judicial authority law, the Egyptian president has the right to choose the heads of Egypt’s judicial bodies from three nominees proposed from within each body.

The APA, governed by Law 117/1958, is one of the judicial bodies granted total independence from the executive power in the performance of its duties. It is responsible for investigations related to civil servants in all ministries and agencies. The APA also serves as an internal reporting mechanism to which public officials may direct their complaints or reports of corruption.
