CAIRO - 19 August 2017: Mohab Mamish, chairman of the Suez Canal Authority, announced that the Suez Canal witnessed the crossing of the largest cargo ship in the world, the Russian “Moscow Maersk”, on Friday during its tour from Malaysia to Spain, with a loads amounting to 221,000 tons.

In an official statement released Friday, Mamish emphasized that receiving such a huge ship like Moscow Maersk means that the Suez Canal has the capacity to welcome any cargo in the world, reflecting a message of the canal’s ability to receive huge containers.

The crew of the Suez Canal used special techniques to help the ship make its way through the canal.

Mamish stressed in his statement that the New Suez Canal helped to improve the ability to absorb many ships, no matter their size.

President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi signed of drilling document for the New Suez Canal on August 5, 2014, which took one year to build, instead of three years as ordered. The aim of the new canal is to maximize the regional role of the Suez Canal as a logistical and industrial center that is economically and ethnically integrated, seeking to make the region an international competitor in advanced industries and logistics.
