CAIRO - 5 Aug 2017: The National Council for Women (NCW) under Maya Morsi lauded the Tunisian parliament's approval of a law combating violence against women.

The law - to be effective within six months - aims at setting measures to eradicate all kinds of gender-based violence to achieve equality, respect and human dignity.

In an NCW statement on Saturday, Morsi expressed extreme happiness over the victory of the Tunisian women to have such a law.

Morsi said that this law is a pioneering step that all the Arab states should follow, lauding the Tunisian political support to protect Tunisian women from violence.

Morsi also hailed Jordan for the cancellation of Article 308 of the penal code which exempts the raper from punishment in case of marrying his victim, considering this is a positive step to protect the right of the victim.

Morsi that Egypt was pioneering in cancelling Article 291 of the penal code which stipulated that the raper does not face punishment in case of marrying his victim
