CAIRO - 23 June 2026: Alexandria Governor Ayman Attia received Tuesday Ambassador Kim Wan-jong, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Egypt, on his first official visit to Alexandria.
 
The visit aimed to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries and explore opportunities for joint cooperation in the fields of investment, industry, education, and culture.
 
The Governor of Alexandria welcomed the Korean Ambassador, emphasizing the deep historical ties between Egypt and South Korea.
 
He praised the distinguished Korean development experience, particularly in the areas of technology and infrastructure. He noted that Alexandria possesses promising investment potential thanks to its strategic location and its port, which handles approximately 65% ​​of Egypt's foreign trade, making it an attractive destination for Korean investments.
 
The Governor stressed the importance of enhancing economic cooperation between the two sides by organizing joint meetings between the Egyptian and Korean business communities to explore available investment opportunities.
 
He also mentioned coordinating with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) to provide training programs and scholarships that contribute to developing young Egyptian talent.
 
For his part, the Korean Ambassador expressed his delight at visiting Alexandria, praising its historical and cultural significance and its pivotal role in supporting the Egyptian economy.
 
He explained that a number of major Korean companies, most notably Hyundai, have established a regional hub in Alexandria, where the company operates a spare parts distribution center in the free zone. This reflects the confidence of Korean investors in the governorate's investment climate.
 
The Ambassador affirmed his country's keenness to expand Korean investments in Egypt, particularly in the industrial and development sectors, contributing to supporting sustainable development efforts and strengthening economic cooperation between the two countries.
 
The meeting also addressed avenues for cultural and educational cooperation. The two sides discussed enhancing collaboration in the educational field and supporting the dissemination and teaching of the Korean language, in order to meet the growing interest and demand among students to learn it.
 
The Ambassador's visit also included a tour of the Library of Alexandria, one of Egypt's most prominent cultural and historical landmarks.
 
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Korean ambassador affirmed that 2025 marked the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Egypt and South Korea, representing an important opportunity to launch towards broader horizons of cooperation and partnership.
 
He noted his country's aspiration to contribute effectively to Egypt's development journey in the fields of education, digital transformation, and clean energy, emphasizing that South Korea looks forward to being an active strategic partner in Egypt's development journey.
