CAIRO – 15 June 2026: Admiral Osama Rabie, Chairman of the Suez Canal Authority (SCA), received Irish Ambassador to Cairo, Aidan O'Hara, at the authority's headquarters in Ismailia to discuss methods of strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Admiral Rabie expressed his pride in the growing ties between Egypt and Ireland, praising the Irish side's commitment to expanding cooperation with the SCA, which serves as a vital and leading artery for global trade between the East and West.
During the meeting, Rabie outlined the latest regional geopolitical developments and their direct impact on international maritime trade and Suez Canal traffic. In this regard, he confirmed that the SCA continues to deploy flexible strategies to navigate these geopolitical challenges. This includes offering an integrated package of specialized navigational and maritime services designed to meet the evolving needs of transiting vessels.
Rabie further indicated that the authority is actively advancing its ambitious strategy to develop the navigational channel and upgrade its maritime fleet, ensuring the highest standards of maritime safety and security.
For his part, Ambassador O'Hara expressed Ireland's deep appreciation for the strategic role the Suez Canal plays in supporting the global economy. He commended the Egyptian administration’s sustainable development vision for the canal, positioning it as a core pillar of international trade, particularly between Europe, China, and East Asian countries.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Admiral Rabie presented the New Suez Canal Shield to the Irish Ambassador. Following the discussions, Ambassador O'Hara took a maritime tour of the New Suez Canal and visited the Suez Canal Museum to witness the scale of the infrastructure achievements firsthand.
