CAIRO - 3 June 2026: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Egyptians Abroad Dr. Badr Abdelatty met Wednesday, with Dr. Chilidzi Marwala, UN Under-Secretary-General and President of the United Nations University in Tokyo.
 
During the meeting, Minister Abdelatty expressing appreciation for the important role the university plays in supporting the implementation of the UN system's development agenda.
 
He also commended the university's contributions to discussing emerging issues, particularly artificial intelligence.
 
The UNU was formally established in 1972, and began operation in 1975; it has been operating for more than 50 years now.  
 
 
Visit of the President of the United Nations University to Egypt
 
The Foreign Minister welcomed the upcoming visit of the President of the United Nations University (UNU) to Egypt to discuss ways to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the University.
 
He expressed his aspiration to strengthen cooperation with the University in all fields, particularly regarding artificial intelligence governance.
 
He noted the steps Egypt has taken to promote the use of AI, including the establishment of the National Council for Artificial Intelligence in 2019 and the launch of the National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence and the Document on the Responsible Use of AI.
 
 
COP27 Initiative
 
The Foreign Minister also expressed his aspiration to enhance cooperation with the University on climate-related issues.
 
He highlighted the role played by the Cairo International Center for Conflict Resolution, Peacekeeping and Peacebuilding in this area since the launch of the Climate Responses for Sustainable Peace (CRSP) initiative during the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh.
 
Minister Abdelatty extended an invitation to the President of the United Nations University (UNU) to participate in the sixth edition of the Aswan Forum for Sustainable Peace and Development, scheduled to be held in November 2026 in Aswan, as it is an important platform for dialogue and exchange of views on various priority regional and international issues.
