CAIRO – 30 May 2026: The Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation announced that 35,514 animals were slaughtered free of charge for citizens at government-approved abattoirs during Eid al-Adha under full veterinary supervision.
The ministry said the initiative was carried out as part of the state's efforts to protect public health, preserve the environment, and ensure the safety and quality of meat for consumers.
The move comes in line with directives issued by Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk to the General Authority for Veterinary Services to maximize preparedness at government slaughterhouses and provide veterinary inspection, examination, and supervision services for sacrificial animals throughout the Eid holiday.
Dr. Hamed Al-Aqnas, Head of the General Authority for Veterinary Services, said government slaughterhouses received 5,942 sacrificial animals on the fourth day of Eid, bringing the total number slaughtered during the holiday to 35,514.
According to Al-Aqnas, the total included 21,278 cattle, 7,347 sheep, 5,992 buffaloes, 550 goats, and 347 camels.
He noted that the high turnout reflects increasing public awareness of the importance of using approved government slaughterhouses, which provide comprehensive veterinary supervision and ensure meat is safe and fit for human consumption. He added that these facilities also help reduce random and illegal slaughter practices, contributing to environmental protection and improved public hygiene.
Al-Aqnas further stressed that monitoring and inspection campaigns at slaughterhouses, livestock markets, and meat outlets will continue in coordination with relevant authorities to ensure compliance with health and veterinary regulations and safeguard public health.
