CAIRO - 25 May 2026: The problem of stray dogs has been a hot topic over the past months, especially in Cairo, prompting the governorate to address the issue scientifically.
This was announced by Governor of Cairo Ibrahim Saber, who confirmed steps will be taken in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and the Veterinary Directorate.
A shelter is being constructed and will be completed within a month on a 5,000-square-meter plot east of the Autostrad Road in Tebin. It will accommodate 700 dogs, providing a shelter for strays.
Set to be completed and inauguarted in June, the shelter will be managed in a way that ensures public safety without compromising animal welfare, a fundamental element for maintaining ecological balance.
This came during a meeting of the Cairo Governorate Executive Council, attended by the deputy governors for the four districts, directors of service departments, district heads, and a number of governorate leaders, regarding joint cooperation between state agencies and civil society to manage the Tebin shelter.
The Governor of Cairo indicated that this shelter will be managed in cooperation between the governorate, the Ministry of Agriculture, the General Authority for Veterinary Services, and the Cairo Veterinary Directorate.
Cooperation will also extend to NGOs and civil society organizations concerned with animal welfare issues.
