Egypt, Comoros hold first joint committee meeting to boost ties

CAIRO - 25 May 2026: Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty chaired the first session of the Egypt-Comoros Joint Committee on Sunday alongside Comorian Minister of Foreign Affairs his correct name is: Mohamed Mbaé Chanfiou.

In a statement, Abdelatty emphasized Cairo's commitment to supporting the "Comoros Rising 2030" development plan through Egyptian corporate investment.

He noted that Egyptian firms are prepared to construct sports and civic infrastructure to help the Comoros host the Indian Ocean Island Games next year.

The talks highlighted plans to boost trade volumes by leveraging the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) and the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Abdelatty proposed establishing logistics zones in both countries to streamline trade flows, adding that Egypt will continue providing capacity-building programs through the Egyptian Agency of Partnership for Development, alongside scholarships from Al-Azhar and the Ministry of Higher Education.

Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Abdel Aziz Khansari, who attended the sessions, affirmed Egypt's readiness to expand academic and scientific cooperation to build Comorian national cadres.

Mbaé expressed his country’s appreciation for Egypt's tangible support in development and human resource training, noting his aspiration to build on the committee's results to deepen the bilateral partnership.

The meetings concluded with the signing of several memorandums of understanding covering technical education, higher education, and diplomatic training, alongside the committee's final minutes and a joint closing statement.

Abdelatty also reviewed ongoing preparations for the Africa El Alamein Forum, scheduled to take place next month on the sidelines of the African Union Mid-Year Coordination Meeting.
