CAIRO – 21 May 2026: Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received Algeria’s Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs, National Community Abroad and African Affairs, Ahmed Attaf, on Thursday.
The meeting was also attended by Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates, Badr Abdelatty; Algerian Ambassador to Egypt Mohamed Sofiane; and Chief of Cabinet to the Algerian foreign minister, Idris Latreche.
Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said that Attaf delivered a letter from Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to President El-Sisi, in which he expressed his sincere appreciation for the president and emphasized the deep-rooted ties between the two countries, as well as the rapidly growing cooperation and partnership in light of the remarkable growth in investments and trade.
The letter also stressed the mutual interest in further developing bilateral relations and enhancing consultation and coordination mechanisms regarding developments in the Arab world, the Middle East and Africa.
President El-Sisi welcomed Minister Attaf and asked him to convey his greetings to President Tebboune, stressing the close and historic ties between the two countries.
The president highlighted the importance of building on the outcomes of the Joint Higher Committee meeting held in Cairo in November 2025 to further enhance cooperation, particularly in the areas of trade and investment, in a way that serves the interests of both peoples.
Furthermore, President El-Sisi emphasized the need to intensify consultation and coordination between Egypt and Algeria in light of the exceptional circumstances facing the region.
This includes the tripartite mechanism among Egypt, Algeria and Tunisia, which serves as a strategic diplomatic framework for Libya’s neighboring countries, with the aim of advancing a comprehensive political settlement and coordinating positions to help end the Libyan crisis.
President El-Sisi affirmed that the core principle of Egyptian foreign policy is based on avoiding escalation, refraining from interference in the internal affairs of states, seeking peaceful resolutions to crises, achieving stability and development, and safeguarding the resources of nations.
Minister Attaf confirmed that President Tebboune looks forward to continuing political coordination with Egypt on various issues of mutual interest in order to reinforce regional peace and stability, including through the tripartite mechanism with Tunisia.
He also stressed Algeria’s — and President Tebboune’s personal — commitment to enhancing cooperation with Egypt across various fields, noting that bilateral relations have witnessed significant progress over the past five years. Consequently, Egypt has become Algeria’s top trading partner in the Arab world and one of the top three investors in Algeria.
