CAIRO - 14 April 2026: As part of monitoring the development of the scientific research system in the Arab Republic of Egypt, an analytical report on the research landscape in higher education and scientific research institutions was recently published.

The report, covering the period from 2018 to March 2026, is based on data from the Scopus database and accurately reflects the progress Egypt has made in knowledge production and enhancing its presence on the international scientific research map.

Scopus is one of the world's largest abstract and citation databases of peer-reviewed literature.

The report reveals continuous growth in Egyptian scientific output across various disciplines.

Recent years have witnessed a significant increase in the number of published research papers, coinciding with an improvement in Egypt's global ranking, particularly in 2025 compared to previous years.

The report also highlights the wide diversity of the scientific research landscape, covering eight main fields and 30 sub-fields encompassing vital sectors such as health, energy, water, artificial intelligence, and the environment.

This reflects the country's ability to keep pace with contemporary development challenges.

Increased Scientific Citation Rates

Regarding the quality of scientific research, the report showed a clear improvement in international impact indicators. Scientific citation rates (H-index) increased in many disciplines, particularly in the fields of medical sciences, advanced technologies, and materials science. This confirms the shift of Egyptian scientific research from a focus on quantity to achieving a tangible global scientific impact.

In this context, Cairo University stands out as one of the most important pillars of scientific research in Egypt. The report's results confirm its leading position among institutions contributing to a large number of vital research fields.

The university ranked first in 25 out of 30 research subfields, in addition to ranking second in four fields and third in one field, reflecting its academic diversity and comprehensive leadership.

The university also demonstrates a strong presence in the fields of medical and health sciences, such as: pathology, oncology, and medical imaging, alongside its excellence in basic life sciences and engineering and technological disciplines, including artificial intelligence and communication systems.
