Grand Imam of Al-Azhar congratulates Pope Tawadros and Christians on Easter

CAIRO – 9 April 2026: Egypt’s Grand Imam, Ahmed Al-Tayeb, Sheikh of Al-Azhar, congratulated His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, in a telephone call on the occasion of Easter.

During the call, the Grand Imam expressed his sincere wishes for His Holiness and all Christian brothers and sisters in Egypt and across the world to enjoy continued peace and prosperity. He emphasized that these occasions represent a renewed opportunity to solidify the values of love and tolerance among all Egyptians and to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and national unity.

The Grand Imam stressed that Egyptians remain a unique model of cohesion and coexistence, united by a shared history and a common destiny. He prayed that God Almighty grant Egypt security and stability, protecting its people from harm and spreading peace throughout the world.

For his part, His Holiness Pope Tawadros expressed his appreciation for the Grand Imam's kind gesture. He noted that holidays are an essential opportunity to renew bonds of affection, stating that the spirit of brotherhood serves as a "safety valve" for Egypt’s stability. The Pope concluded that the cohesion between Muslims and Christians embodies a unique, civilized image, confirming that Egypt remains a homeland united by mutual respect.
