CAIRO – 22 February 2025: A phone call took place between Badr Abdelatty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration, and his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi, on Saturday. The discussion focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries and addressing the latest developments in the Middle East.
Ambassador Tamim Khilaf, the official spokesperson for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reported that both ministers expressed a strong desire to convene the joint governmental committee, led by the foreign ministers of both nations, in line with the outcomes of the strategic dialogue session held in Beijing in December 2024. They also emphasized their commitment to bolstering economic and trade relations, encouraging increased Chinese investment in Egypt to benefit both countries.
The two ministers reviewed the ongoing situations in Sudan, Gaza, and Syria. Minister Abdelatty outlined Egypt’s efforts to solidify the ceasefire agreement in Gaza and ensure its implementation in three distinct phases. He also highlighted Egypt’s plans for early recovery and reconstruction in Gaza, while ensuring that Palestinians remain on their land. The plan has garnered significant Arab support, a position shared by the Chinese minister.
The spokesman further noted that the call addressed the situation in Sudan, where Minister Abdelatty underscored the importance of respecting Sudan’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire in Sudan to pave the way for a comprehensive political process involving all Sudanese factions, enabling the country to restore security and stability. Finally, the two ministers discussed the ongoing crisis in Syria and agreed on the necessity of initiating an inclusive political process that represents all Syrian factions. Both parties agreed that Syria should become a pillar of stability, contributing to the fight against terrorism and extremism in the region.
