CAIRO – 8 February 2025: CAIRO – 8 February 2025: Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty held a phone call on Friday evening, February 7, with Mr. Paulo Rangel, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal. The discussion focused on enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries and addressing the latest regional developments.
Minister Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's commitment to strengthening bilateral ties with Portugal in the political, economic, and cultural aspects. He also noted that February 25 marks the 50th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
Minister Abdelatty expressed his hope for the convening of the second session of the joint committee between Egypt and Portugal, led by the foreign ministers, to further advance all aspects of bilateral relations. He particularly highlighted the importance Egypt places on boosting trade relations and attracting foreign investments.
Additionally, the Egyptian Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for Portugal’s support of Egypt within the European Union. He also reiterated his aspiration for continued support in advancing the strategic and comprehensive partnership between Egypt and the EU, particularly focusing on the economic component. Minister Abdelatty welcomed the adoption of the decision regarding the second tranche of the European financial package for Egypt, valued at 4 billion euros.
Minister Abdelatty also praised Portugal's supportive stance on the Palestinian cause. He emphasized Egypt's priority in consolidating the ceasefire agreement and ensuring the implementation of all its provisions and timelines.
The Egyptian Minister highlighted the importance of addressing the dire humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip. He stressed that any vision for Gaza’s future must include the unity of the West Bank and Gaza, alongside the return of the Palestinian Authority to the Strip. Furthermore, he underlined the need for the Palestinian population to remain in Gaza during the early recovery and reconstruction phases.
Minister Abdelatty reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to the Palestinian people’s legitimate rights, including their right to self-determination and the establishment of an independent state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in line with international resolutions.
