UNHCR: Egypt received 1.2 M refugees from Sudan so far

CAIRO - 1 October 2024: Hanan Hamdan, Head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Egypt, emphasized that the joint program launched by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the European Union and various UN agencies operating in Egypt, aims to strengthen the protection and resilience of refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants in Egypt.

In an interview with "Nile News," Hamdan stated, "The program aims to underscore the necessity of international support for Egyptian institutions, particularly in the fields of education and healthcare, to accommodate the growing number of refugees and asylum seekers. It also presents an opportunity to attract more donations to help bolster Egyptian institutions' capacity to ensure the protection of refugees."

Hamdan highlighted that Egypt has already received over one million refugees from Sudan, while the total number of refugees registered by the UNHCR has reached 800,000 from various nationalities, with the majority being Sudanese. She added that continuous collaboration is taking place with Egypt to provide healthcare and education for the most vulnerable groups.

According to official statistics, Egypt has received 1.2 million individuals from Sudan. There is coordination at the highest levels to accommodate these large numbers. The program serves as a platform to spotlight the urgent needs, support Egypt's efforts in refugee protection, and address the increasing demand for resources.

The UNHCR is actively seeking additional donors from the European Union and exploring other avenues for collaboration to meet the critical needs across various sectors.
