CAIRO - 22 April 2024: Eleven defendants have been referred to a misdemeanor court for spreading false news and rumours, likely to disturb public peace regarding the death of Naira Salah, a student at Arish University.

The rumors were likely meant to instill panic among people and harm public interest, according to a Sunday stay the prosecution.

Investigations revealed that a group of people, some of whom had fled outside the country, used their accounts on various social networking sites to publish the false news. The rumors included that the victim, who tragically committed suicide, was rather killed, and that the family of her killers is influential and would not be held accountable.

The trial will begin on April 28.

Salah committed suicide after some of her colleagues threatened to spread personal information and pictures of her. She was 19 years old.
