CAIRO - 8 April 2024: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry affirmed on Monday the necessity for Israel to adhere to the provisions of international law and international humanitarian law.

This entails halting its attacks against Palestinian civilians and international relief workers in the Gaza Strip, who play an active role in addressing the catastrophic humanitarian conditions affecting the Strip's residents, according to the German news agency.

The statement came during a phone call received by Shoukry from Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid.

The spokesperson, in a press release, stated that Minister Shoukry briefed his Australian counterpart on the latest developments regarding the war on Gaza and the outcomes of Egyptian consultations with international powers to contain the crisis.

He also extended condolences to the Australian government for the death of an Australian relief worker who was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting relief workers in Gaza affiliated with the World Central Kitchen, resulting in the deaths of seven relief workers from the organization.

Additionally, the ministers discussed the deteriorating humanitarian and security situations in Gaza, as well as efforts to ensure the implementation of Security Council resolutions and relevant General Assembly resolutions on the Gaza crisis. They emphasized the urgent need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and ensuring the full, safe, and swift delivery of humanitarian aid to meet the urgent needs of Gaza's population.

Shoukry praised Australia's decision to resume support for UNRWA, highlighting the pivotal role played by the organization in addressing the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Strip.

Both sides reiterated their full rejection of any Israeli military operation in the city of Rafah, which would exacerbate the dire humanitarian conditions for the Strip's residents and result in further devastating losses of life.

The call also touched upon various aspects of bilateral cooperation between Egypt and Australia, with the ministers emphasizing the importance of continuing coordination and consultation to enhance bilateral cooperation in all fields, in addition to coordinating positions on regional and international crises of mutual interest.
