Giza sinking ferry owner imprisoned for 4 days pending investigation

CAIRO – 26 February 2024: The investigation authorities in Giza decided to imprison the owner of the sinking ferry for 4 days pending investigation on several charges that included manslaughter due to overloading and operating a boat without a license.

Egypt's Minister of Labour Hassan Shehata, announced Monday, disbursing LE 200,000 for each victim of the tragic ferry sinking incident in Giza. Other LE 20.000 will be disbursed for each injured person, from the accident by the Irregular Employment Department.

A ferry carrying workers in Giza's Monsha'et El Kanater sank on Saturday, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least ten individuals and leaving five others hospitalized.

According to the Ministry of Labour, it was found that the victims were from the governorates of Kafr El-Sheikh, Giza, and Fayoum, and they numbered 15 workers.

Shortly after the incident took place, ten ambulanced rushed to the area, transporting the injured to Mubarak Central Hospital in the city.

Three of the injured were discharged after receiving necessary healthcare but one remains under medical observation at the hospital, according to the ministry.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Labour, the names of the workers who were announced dead as a result of the accident are: “Ihab Muhammad Abd al-Nabi, Abd al-Rahman Yasser Fathi, Sami Fouad Abdeen, Saif Ibrahim Hindawi, Mahmoud Ibrahim Mahmoud, Hamdi Osama Hamdi, Ahmed Ezz al-Din Yahya, Mahmoud Muhammad al-Sayyid, Ayman Eid Al-Sayed Salama, and Ayman Ahmed Ahmed Mahmoud.”

Names of the injured are: “Osama Rushdi Muhammad, Ibrahim Samir Abdel Moneim, Ahmed Ismail Abdel Hamid, Muhammad Mahmoud Abdel Tawab, and Mahmoud Abdel Ghani Mahmoud.”

The Public Prosecution has initiated an investigation into the incident.
