CAIRO – 25 February 2024: Egypt’s House of Representatives has approved amendments to Law 97/1959, increasing the fees for issuing a passport to LE 1,000 instead of LE 250.

Issuance of passports will still be subject to additional fees as stipulated by other relevant laws.

The amendments were submitted by the Cabinet and is set to come into effect after the president's approval and publishing in the official gazette.

MP Ahmed Saleh, a member of the Defense and National Security Committee of the House, stated that the amendments aim to ensure financial protection for the state budget.

The increase in issuance fees is intended to mitigate losses resulting from exchange rate fluctuations, Saleh said.

It also aligns with the new global standards as well as requirements of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for issuing passports electronically, while enhancing security measures and strengthening anti-counterfeiting effectiveness, he added.
