CAIRO – February 23, 2024: Egypt commemorated, Friday, the one-year anniversary since assuming the presidency of the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW).

On February 23, 2023, Egypt assumed the presidency of AMCOW from Namibia for a two-year term (February 2023 to February 2025), according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation.

Minister Hani Sweilam stated in the release that Egypt's appointment to lead the African Ministers' Council on Water underscores recognition of Egypt's significant role on the African continent.

Throughout its tenure as president of AMCOW, Egypt has actively sought to enhance cooperation among African nations to address climate challenges and achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 related to water, Minister Sweilam added.

Egypt advocates for defending the right of African citizens to access clean water supplies and sanitation services and encourages international development partners to invest in this critical sector for the benefit of the African continent.

Under the auspices of AMCOW, the African Voices on Water (AVOW) magazine was launched during the World Water Week in Stockholm. This publication serves as a premier platform for disseminating comprehensive information about water and sanitation issues across Africa.
