CAIRO – 22 February 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry met Thursday with UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom David Cameron in Rio De Janeiro on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers Meeting.

The meeting tackled the situation in Gaza Strip and related tensions in the Middle East as the two sides exchanged assessments of the security and humanitarian conditions, and views on ways out of the crisis.

Minister Shokry noted that Egypt counted on the United Kingdom to exert pressure on Israel to halt its preparations for carrying out a ground offensive in Palestinian Rafah and accomplish a ceasefire.

The Egyptian minister denounced that the discussions of Western countries in the conference ignored the severity of the humanitarian disaster in Gaza Strip. Yet, they focused on crises and conflicts happening elsewhere. He added that a ceasefire and sufficient supply of humanitarian aid are essential, stressing the role of the UNRWA whose funding was suspended by a number of countries, including the UK.

On the bilateral level, Minister Shokry commended the growing economic cooperation as UK investments are the largest in the Egyptian market in terms of foreign investment.
