Egyptian FM expresses to Iranian counterpart concern on growing military tensions in Red Sea

CAIRO – 1 February 2024: Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shokry received Thursday a phone call from his Iranian counterpart Hussein Amir Abdel Lahyan as they conferred over the Gaza War and the disastrous humanitarian conditions endured by the Palestinian people in the Strip.

They discussed working on different levels to achieve a ceasefire, sustainable delivery of aid as well as the two-state solution.

Minister Shokry briefed Minister Abdel Lahyan on the efforts deployed by Egypt in order to attain pacification. In a related context, he stressed the necessity of implementing UN Security Council Resolution No. 2720 providing the creation of a UN mechanism that would accelerate and observe the supply of humanitarian aid to Gazans.

The Egyptian minister equally expressed concern on the expansion of the scope of conflict, which had its toll on the sovereignty and stability of a number of Arab countries, and as a consequence, affects endeavors aimed at the resolution of the crisis.  

Similarly, Minister Shokry underscored Egypt's denunciation of the growth of military tensions in the Red Sea, and that negatively affect the interests of many countries, including Egypt, as they compose a threat to navigation in a vital and strategic international waterway.

The Egyptian and Iranian ministers affirmed their rejection to all plans and measures targeting the displacement of Palestinians from their territories.
