CAIRO – 8 November 2023: Ambassador Herro Mustafa Garg was sworn in on Tuesday as the new US Ambassador to Cairo, the US State Department’s Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs announced today.

“The Amb will lead the US Embassy in Cairo during a significant moment in the strategic bilateral Egypt-US relationship,” the bureau said.

Garg will also work to “advance our joint efforts for stability, security, and prosperity in the region,” the bureau added.

The new ambassador appeared with her two girls while taking the oath.

Veteran diplomat Garg, with the rank of Minister-Counselor, served as the US ambassador to Bulgaria for more than three years until last March.

She was the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Lisbon and Portugal and served as the Political Minister Counselor at the US Embassy in New Delhi, India, according to information provided by the White House.

Moreover, she worked in the Office of the Vice President on Middle East and South and Central Asia issues and was the Deputy Director of the Afghanistan Office.

Other Middle East-related posts held by Garg included the Advisor on the Middle East in the Office of the Under Secretary for Political Affairs, Director for Iran, Israeli-Palestinian Affairs, and Jordan at the National Security Council, as well as National Security Council Director for Iraq and Afghanistan.

She was also the lead US Civilian Coordinator in Iraq’s Mosul and Consular Officer in Lebanon’s Beirut.

Garg, who hails from Kurdish descent, speaks several languages including Arabic.

Garg was nominated to the post of the US Ambassador to Cairo by US President Joe Biden in March.
